1/20/10 Great CIC-SHRM meeting today on Performance Management by Randy Council!  Obviously, I have not been very active on this blog and need to make a resolution to improve my activity.  However, I am about to replace this blog with a facebook fanpage that will be much easier and faster for me to keep updated.  It doesn't require HTML software and can be done in the parking lot while waiting for my son.  I did notice a few deadlines today on the SHRM Workplace Bulletin that might be handy for companies which is below:

Date

Requirement

2/1/10

IRS: W-2 distribution deadline. NOTE: The official deadline is Jan. 31, but since Jan. 31 falls on a Sunday in 2010, the deadline to furnish 2009 W-2s to employees has been extended to Monday, Feb. 1.

2/1/10

OSHA: Most employers are required to post the Log of Work-Related Injuries and Illnesses (Form 300) in their workplaces from Feb. 1 until April 30 of each year.

2/17/10

HIPAA: The HIPAA privacy and security rules become applicable to business associates on this date.

5/22/10

PPA: For collectively bargained plans, the rules on phased retirement pension distributions apply after the first plan year that begins after the last of the agreements terminates or, if earlier, this date.

12/31/10

EGTRRA: The Economic Growth and Tax Relief Reconciliation Act (EGTRRA) amendments to pension provisions of the Internal Revenue Code and ERISA do not expire because the PPA eliminates EGTRRA's sunset provision.

1/1/15

PPA: Most U.S. companies will have until at least this date to fully fund their pension plans.

Bye for now!

7/16/09 Tune into Access channel 4 at 2am, 10am, and 7pm today for the Springfield Business and Economic Review to see Rogers HR Consulting discussing employer responsibilities with regard to their human resources, current trends, and opportunities for clients to get a discount and training from Rogers HR Consulting in September and November.

5/11/09 Looking forward to working with the participants in tomorrows Employee Relations program for Chamber members and the same topic Thursday for Goodwill.  You can find these on the "Archived Events" list since our Intern is moving on this week.  He put them there to save me some extra work later this week.  He has done an outstanding job getting my first video published to the site. Next week I plan to travel to DePage to deliver a SHRM Foundation video program representing the ISC-SHRM on Succession Planning.  Then on a personal side we have graduation coming.  Busy month!

4/22/09 We are now on twitter and still figuring out how to use it.  You can search for RogersHR and you should find it.  Next week we are doing a two day HR Basics seminar for the IL Community Action Agency Association and their members.  We are currently working on a Compensation Study for a local organization.  Finally I plan to give a short presentation on RHRC at the next Prospectors Meeting.  New "Prospectors" are always welcome at the Lone Star on Veterans Parkway from 11:30-1pm every 1st and 3rd Wednesday.  Hope to see you there and look for me on Twitter, Facebook, and Linked In.  I have a My Space and Plaxo account but not using them very often.  Happy Spring everyone!

4/9/09 Upcoming Event: "Ready or Not...Good Employee Relations" is Here to Stay!  Tuesday, May 12, 2009, 9-Noon at LLCC Capital City Training Center, 130 West Mason Street, Room 203, Springfield, IL.  See www.gscc.org for more information.

3/23/09 Wow!  I can't believe it's been almost two months since I posted.  As some of you know via my facebook and linked in profiles, my dad was diagnosed with cancer last month.  It has been a rocky road learning all about that illness, treatments and personal struggles.  That's why it's been a while.  So to catch you up, I did a program for the Chamber last week about the changes HR has to implement relative to the amended Family Medical Leave Act.  You will see from my posting below that went into effect 1/16/09.  Much to learn on that topic.  However, I was suppose to cover ADA changes too as they were intended to be effective in January but were put on hold 2/13/09.  So no worries there just yet.  I will soon be developing a program on how companies should handle the HR aspects of EFCA (Employee Free Choice Act) if it does go into effect and even if doesn't the time will be well spent learning good business management practices to put and keep in place.  I am looking forward to our networking group, Prospectors, booth at Business Connections next Thursday.  I hope to see you all there!  I also want to let you all know that the flyer and registration form is now available for the 10th annual IL State Council HR Conference in July.  More information is available at www.illinois-shrm.org.  Finally, I was recertified as an SPHR through 2012 and my company, Rogers HR Consulting, was approved as an HR Educator that can use the HRCI Approved Provider seal on training programs I provide to any organization, group, company, etc.  That along with last years honor of being selected Small Business of the Year are among my biggest accomplishments as an owner in the last 8 years.  Thanks to all my clients and sub-contractors who have helped me come this far!

1/29/08 I am sure you have heard there is a lot of change on the employment front just based on the last administrations changes and more to come.  Here's a quick list of deadlines coming up for 2009.  You can look up the details of these changes via www.dol.com.  However, business is slow for me right now so I'd be happy to help anyone interpret how these effective dates would apply to your organization.  Please give me a call and send me referrals.  Thank you.

1/8/08  Next week I plan to be speak at the Quincy HR Chapter on "Trust" in the Workplace using Starbucks as a case study.  I was also asked to speak in September at our local chapter using a new DVD & Case study of 3M called "Seeing It Forward".  I look forward to learning more about that topic myself as I prepare.  Today, I confirmed with the chamber the first topic of four "HR Hot Topics to be presented this year at LLCC's Capital City Training Center.  Thanks to the Small Business Development Council (SBDC) for sponsoring the room.  The topic on Tuesday, March 17 will cover the changes in the new ADA & FMLA amendments just implemented 1/1/09.  More details and future hot topic dates are listed on my main page.

If your obligated under the new ADAAA and FMLA rules be sure to put up the new posters on your employee bulletin boards.  You can download any required posters using the US and IL poster page links on my resources web page, but more specifically her is the link to the new amendment to FMLA regarding the Military Leave:  http://www.dol.gov/esa/whd/fmla/NDAAAmndmnts.pdf

I in the process now of sending out letters to all my clients regarding a special discount for early posting of training and projects on my 2009 calendar by February 15th.  If your interested, let me know.  I am preparing for a new semester.  I have several local businesses that have volunteered to work with my HR students which is going to be a wonderful value ad to their learning process.  Thanks to those of you who have volunteered.

I am now on Linked In and Facebook.  If your not on them too, jump on and let's get connected.  Have a great week everyone.

12/31/08 Happy New Year Everyone!

12/17/08 With the holiday's coming, I'd like to wish all my clients, business associates, friends, family, and students a joyous season and a Happy New Year!  Talk to you next year!  It should be quite an interesting one from an HR Management standpoint given our state and federal administration changes.

12/4/08 Having recently returned from the annual SHRM Leadership Conference in DC, I have a new appreciation and understanding for the current and future HR policy changes.  With the changes this year we already have alot to digest and there is more on the horizon expected once the new administration takes office next year.  In a recent article I was reading about the ADA changes that go into affect 1/1/09, it said "employers should provide just as much managerial training about the amended law now as they did after the ADA (now called ADAAA) was first enacted" (smith, HR Magazine, 08).  Basically, the amendment covers more individuals than before so managers need to be educated as to what is considered a disability among other things. Also, employers may need to revise their employee handbooks, job descriptions, and internal protocols and forms.  FMLA has made things easier as they introduced several new forms that cover various types of FMLA leave.  Remember, FMLA only applies to employers with 50 or more employees NOW but beware 2009 administrative changes may lower that to 15 or 25 based on previous talks in congress.  Bottom line is keep your eyes and ears open to further changes as to how we manage our Human Resources.

11/24/08 Did you know I teach for one of the best colleges in America?  UIS logoUIS was honored this fall as the best public masters college in the Midwest and for being the most affordable because graduates come out with the least amount of debt.  Read more at http://www.uis.edu/cbam/online/.

11/7/08  Unrelated to HR I had to show off my kids picture.  Adam is almost 8 and Brooke is 17.  They are my pride and joy!  :)

11/5/08  I had the pleasure of attending Brown, Hay & Stephens 13th Annual Employment Law Seminar last week (outstanding as usual) and the best advice I came away with that I had not previously heard is "Develop a Blogging Policy".  Employees are now using their own personal blog to bash companies, fellow employees, customers and whatever else they can think of to share with the world.  As a result companies are at risk for a whole host of things going well beyond just plain embarrassment.  Here are a few sites you can visit just to get an idea of the scope of the problem [Enjoy!  :)]:

11/2/08  Hello Everyone, I thought I would start a page that will allow me to post information that might be useful to clients related to Human Resources Management and Development.  As new or important information comes across my desk, I will post to this blog spot first.  I encourage you to stay tuned to future postings that will allow you to stay up with your responsibilities related to HRM.
